WHAT IS RAFT SYSTEMS?

It is a hydroponic method where plants float on a raft above a nutrient solution. The setup includes a large water tank filled with nutrient solution and floating rafts (usually made of EVA or XPS materials) that hold the plants.

HOW IT WORKS?

1. Plant Placement: Plants can be fixed in the rafts in various ways:
● Planting Holes: Direct insertion into holes in the raft.
● Foam/Rock Wool Blocks:Plants placed in blocks that sit on the raft.
● Direct Insertion: Seeds or seedlings inserted directly into the raft.
2. Nutrient Solution Circulation: The rafts float on top of a large tank of  nutrient solution, with roots submerged in the liquid.
3. Oxygenation: An air pump provides oxygen to the nutrient solution, ensuring the roots receive sufficient oxygen for healthy growth.
4. Maintaining Water Level: The nutrient solution level is kept consistent to ensure roots are submerged.
ADVANTAGES

1. High growth rate and yield: Plants experience up to 30% faster growth rates and leafy greens like lettuce can yield 20-30% more per square meter compared to soil farming due to consistent nutrient delivery and oxygenation.
2. Efficient space usage: Plants can be closely spaced, making it ideal for high-density planting.
3. Reduced labor: Automated systems can reduce labor costs by up to 50%, allowing for easier maintenance and monitoring.
4. Flexibility: Can be easily scaled up or down, making it suitable for both small and large operations.
Suitable for growing vegetables (examples)
● Lettuce
● Spinach
● Kale
● Arugula
● Basil
● Mint
● Cilantro
● Watercress

● Parsley

The Raft system is ideal for growing leafy vegetables and herbs, particularly those that thrive in a consistently wet environment. This method ensures a stable supply of nutrients and oxygen to the roots, leading to rapid growth and high yields. It is particularly favored in commercial operations due to its simplicity and efficiency.
